Semana Santa

Thousands of people, including those from other cities and countries, attend 2015 rituals to commemorate Semana Santa (Holy Week) in the small town of Larantuka, one of the most respected cities in Indonesia in terms of Catholic traditions. Strongly influenced by the Portuguese cultures since the 16 century, Catholic traditions in Larantuka—located in the eastern side of Flores Island—have grown in smooth acculturation with local cultures. However, some locals thought that the Semana Santa ritual is now less solemn compared with the years when it yet to be a tourist attraction.
