Javan hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi—previously classified under Spizaetus) is endemic to the island of Java, Indonesia. The population is nowadays estimated at over 600 individuals. This dark brown raptor is the national bird of Indonesia. Due to ongoing habitat loss, small population size, limited range and hunting, the Javan Hawk-eagle is evaluated as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is also listed on Appendix II of CITES.
