Berau Marine Protected Area

A marine protected area in Derawan archipelago, Berau, East Kalimantan was established just six months before I arrived in 2006. By the time, it still had many problems and needs to be a good-managed conservation area. Important for green turtle conservation—the largest nesting site for the threatened species, the ecosystem and related coastal livelihoods were once endangered from continuing destructive and other unsustainable fishing practices.
